Auslan

Woodbridge Primary School offers Auslan (Australian Sign Language) as a language subject for students in Years 3 to 6, providing practical skills in Auslan communication while promoting understanding and awareness of Deafness and Deaf Culture.

Students learn subject-specific vocabulary, engage in signed conversations, and practise fingerspelling, with a strong emphasis on improving their technique and fluency. Many students particularly enjoy participating in “Auslan News,” where they share personal stories, recount their weekends, describe events or objects, and ask each other questions.

Vocabulary is taught through direct instruction with teacher-performed signs and is supported by online videos, Auslan dictionaries, and engaging methods like songs, puppets, games, and quizzes.

Students watch videos about Deafness and inclusivity, including the autobiography of Deaf author Cece Bell, who shares her childhood challenges of being deaf, allowing them to see different perspectives, and thus helping them connect emotionally with the experiences and challenges of the deaf community.

At school assemblies, the Australian National Anthem is signed in Auslan, and students have also learned to sign the Woodbridge School Song which promotes a sense of unity and inclusivity within the school community.

Dance

An enjoyment of dance can be such a positive part of a student’s school and future life. Woodbridge Primary School provides a highly recognised dance program that aims to foster this within our students, enabling them to develop physically, emotionally and creatively.

Students learn how their body works in relation to alignment, strength, endurance and coordination through individual, group and whole class activities.

Students in Years 4-6 have the opportunity to audition for the highly sought after girls and boys Extension Dance Groups. These groups extend students agility, strength, and coordination and provides them the opportunity to perform for both school and wider community audiences.

Music

Music lessons are designed to ensure students learn key concepts including rhythm, beat, melody and harmony. Students also learn musical notation and the playing of a number of instruments.

Our choir includes students from Years 3-6 and they demonstrate their skills through performances, assemblies and wider community events.

Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of our school program. Students’ knowledge and skills are developed predominantly using a game approach, using an extensive range of resources. Students are exposed to a myriad of activities, so they are able to find a sport that appeals to them.

Students have the opportunity to participate in many carnivals throughout the year, allowing application of skills taught during PE lessons.

Visual Arts

Students examine Art across a broad timeline spectrum, investigating and producing art works from different cultures. Art mediums include drawing, painting, printing, paper mâché , clay works and mixed media. They are actively encouraged to problem solve and work creatively when developing their art pieces. All students showcase their art work at our annual Art Exhibition, where the wider school community are invited to celebrate our students achievements.

Gifted Year 5-6 students in Visual Arts are selected to apply for our Extension Art Program which offers students the opportunity to extend their art skills.
