Literacy

Woodbridge Primary School is committed to providing our students with high-quality literacy instruction, so they develop the fundamental speaking, listening, reading, writing and viewing skills to fully participate in society. Guided by the Science of Reading and Writing, our Literacy Committee review and refine practices in the school on an ongoing basis to ensure our approaches align with the latest research.

Our whole-school Literacy Instructional Outline, with detailed scope and sequences, ensures programs are implemented with consistency across classrooms using evidence-informed practices. This includes explicit instruction in:

  • Word recognition (phonological awareness, phonics, morphology)
  • Language comprehension (background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, literacy knowledge)
  • Fluency
  • Handwriting
  • Syntax
  • Text structure
  • Writing craft
  • Critical thinking

To embed student learning and skills across contexts, and expand their understanding of the world, instruction is also embedded in rich knowledge and literature-based units.

The Multi-Tiered Systems of Support framework is implemented at Woodbridge Primary School to support early identification of students requiring extension or additional literacy instruction, provide evidence-based intervention, and monitor progress. This coordinated approach ensures all students are provided with opportunities to succeed, placing their wellbeing at the heart of our teaching.

Numeracy

At Woodbridge Primary, we are continually refining our Mathematics practice to reflect current evidence-based methods, as guided by our Mathematics Committee. Our whole-school scope and sequence ensures a cohesive progression of learning, with structured lessons that cater to student need. We prioritise explicit teaching of problem-solving strategies to apply content knowledge to solve real-world problems. A range of Paul Swan’s resources and strategies are used to enhance our approach with engaging, hands-on activities that make learning Mathematics both meaningful and enjoyable.
